A Free "Insert Topic Here" Education

NEWSFLASH: Yes, it is true.  You can learn everything you need to learn about Photography on-line for FREE.  In fact, you can learn a lot about most things on-line for FREE or for very little money!!  First I need to ponder, then marvel and then rant for a moment, but ultimately I have two educational tips for you.

The other day I was chatting with a good friend about the high cost of a college education. Back in the good ole' days, it was possible to pay a good chunk of your own college tuition.  I did and I was proud that I could work and make a significant contribution to the cost of my own education.  I felt empowered and independent.  Today the cost of a college education is so out of reach that self-funding is an impossibility.  So, parents pay the bills, students graduate with huge student loans and often with degrees of debatable value.

The cost of a college degree in the United States has increased "12 fold" over the past 30 years, far outpacing inflation of consumer goods, medical expenses and food. According to Bloomberg, college tuition and fees have increased 1,120 percent since records began in 1978.

Isn't it ironic, don't you think?  At a time when college costs are soaring, access to all the facts and information the world has ever known is available on-line for FREE!   Hmmmm....Now I am not suggesting you encourage your kids to bypass college and educate themselves on-line, (maybe I am?) but the reality is you can learn almost anything you need to know from some of the best instructors in the world on your i-phone (if you have good eyes) or on your computer at home and even in your pajamas.

So what are you waiting for?  Learn something new today!

Tip Number 1:  You can learn amazing things from Ivy League quality professors through a company called The Great Courses. These courses aren't free, but I guarantee the cost per credit hour is far less than the cost of your your local community college and you are in for a first rate educational experience!

Check out the world of Engineering from one of the best teachers I know, the former head of the West Point Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering, Stephen Ressler. Understanding the World's Greatest Structures: Science and Innovation from Antiquity to Modernity  Some of the Great Courses are also available on Audible for the small cost of one credit.

Tip Number 2:  If you want to learn how to become a better photographer check out Moose Peterson's FREE iBook on the Fundamentals of Photography.    This is a fantastic introduction to photography and yes, it is FREE.
